1-Phenyl-1H-imidazole-4-carboxylic acid (PPI) is a potent inhibitor of the enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of ammonia to urea in the liver. It has been shown to be a potent inhibitor of the enzyme and has been used as an antihypertensive drug. PPIs have also been shown to reduce creatinine levels in individuals with chronic kidney disease and reduce proteinuria, which is a marker for kidney damage. The inhibitory effects of PPIs are not reversible by decarboxylation, which means long-term use can lead to increased levels of nitrogen in the blood.
