Potassium osmate(VI) is an antimicrobial agent that inhibits the growth of bacteria by reacting with the sulfhydryl groups in proteins, thereby inhibiting protein synthesis. It also has anti-cancer properties, inhibiting the growth of cancer cells by reacting with the aldehyde groups in proteins and interfering with DNA replication. Potassium osmate(VI) is synthesized by dissolving potassium osmate tetroxide in hydrochloric acid to form a solution containing two equivalents of KOSO4. This reaction solution is then added to an asymmetric synthesis, where it reacts with a carbonyl group to produce the desired product. The reaction mechanism for this process is shown below:
KOSO4 + HCl → K+ + SO3H + H2O
HOCH2COH + KOSO4 → HOCH2CHO + KOSO4
HOCH2CHO + KOSO4 → HOCH2CO
