Potassium methoxide is an inorganic compound that has a molecular weight of 100.09 and a melting point of -35°C. It is soluble in water, but insoluble in ethanol. Potassium methoxide reacts with methanol to produce potassium methylate and methanol vapor. The mechanism for this reaction is not well understood, but it may involve the transfer of a proton from the hydroxyl group to the methoxide ion. The product of this reaction is then hydrolyzed by water to form potassium hydroxide and methanol. Potassium methoxide can also react with glycol esters, such as ethylene glycol monomethyl ether acetate, resulting in the formation of metal carbonyls and metal hydroxides.
