Polmacoxib is a cox-2 inhibitor that binds to the enzyme cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), preventing the formation of prostaglandins. It is a monoclonal antibody that blocks the production of chemokines, which are cytokines that attract inflammatory cells to sites of injury and infection. Polmacoxib shows good pharmacokinetic properties with a half-life of approximately 16 hours. Urine samples show polmacoxib as intact drug, with no metabolites detected. In animal studies, polmacoxib has been shown to have anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects similar to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Polmacoxib may also be used in combination with other drugs as an injection solution to prevent or treat inflammation, pain, and fever. Polmacoxib has been shown to inhibit tumor necrosis factor related apoptosis inducing factor (TRAIL) induced apoptosis in human colon cancer cells.
