Paraoxon-methyl is a high-resistance chemical with genotoxic effects. It binds to DNA and inhibits the synthesis of proteins. The reaction mechanism is not yet fully understood, but it may involve an electron transfer from paraoxon to the nitrogen atoms in the phosphate groups of p-nitrophenyl phosphate. Paraoxon-methyl has been shown to be cytotoxic and cause acute toxicities in rats. It also inhibits acetylcholinesterase activity in humans.
