Phosphoric acid also reacts with benzalkonium chloride to form a stable complex that can be used as a disinfectant. The decomposition of phosphoric acid is thermodynamically favorable and the reaction proceeds in two steps: first, the formation of phosphorus pentoxide (P2O5) and water vapor; second, the formation of hydrogen phosphate ion (HPO4-2) and water vapor.
