It is an antimicrobial agent that has been shown to be effective against bowel disease and has a low toxicity. Potassium formate inhibits the growth of bacteria by binding to them and preventing their ability to grow. Formic acid, one of the components of potassium formate, also has inhibitory properties. The complex enzyme present in the cell wall of bacteria, peptidoglycan hydrolase, catalyzes the hydrolysis of glycosidic bonds and prevents the growth of bacteria by inhibiting protein synthesis. Potassium formate is biocompatible with most polymers and can be used for analytical purposes. Formic acid is a substance found in both plants and animals that functions as an antimicrobial agent. It binds to bacterial 16S ribosomal RNA, preventing protein synthesis and DNA replication and causing cell death by inhibiting production of proteins vital for cell division.
