This protein is an important regulator of cellular apoptosis and has been shown to be overexpressed in many cancers, including melanoma, ovarian cancer and breast cancer. Purvalanol A has significant cytotoxic activity against cells with high survivin expression. Purvalanol A also blocks the ABCG2 transporter, which transports drugs across the cell membrane, and prevents transcriptional regulation by taxol. Purvalanol A induces pluripotent cells to differentiate into neural cells and may be useful for treating Parkinson's disease as well as carcinomas.
