Phenosafranin is a surfactant that is used for enhancing the solubility of other compounds. It is a member of the class of organic compounds known as phenols, which are derived from benzene. Phenosafranin has been shown to have a hydrophobic effect that can be detected by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. This surfactant binds to DNA and stabilizes the dna template during polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification reactions. Synchronous fluorescence and redox potential measurements reveal that phenosafranin has an affinity for nitrite ions, while titration calorimetry experiments indicate that it has an affinity for dna duplexes. Optical sensors demonstrate that phenosafranin can bind to human serum albumin, which may increase its effectiveness in biological systems.
