It inhibits the enzyme ATP-ribose transferase, which is involved in the adenosine triphosphate (ATP) synthesis cycle. 3-Phenylthiophene-2-carboxylic acid has been shown to confer neuroprotective effects against cerebral ischemia by inhibiting two or more steps of the multistep reaction that leads to cellular death. 3-Phenylthiophene-2-carboxylic acid also has pharmacological properties and can be used as an acceptor for Suzuki coupling reactions.
