Picaridin is a repellent that has been used in Europe since the 1990s. It is effective against a broad range of insects, including mosquitoes, flies, and ticks. Picaridin is an odorless, colorless substance that has a low vapor pressure at room temperature. In vitro assays have shown picaridin to be active against several types of infectious diseases, such as malaria and dengue fever. Picaridin binds to the insect's olfactory system and disrupts its ability to smell or taste food sources. The compound also causes phase transition at temperatures below 30 °C (86 °F) by changing from liquid to solid form, which may act as a physical barrier to prevent mosquito bites.
Picaridin is not toxic for humans or animals due to its low oral toxicity and lack of skin penetration. It does not accumulate in fatty tissues and shows no evidence of carcinogenicity, mutagenicity, or teratogen
