Polysorbate 80 is a particle that is used in vitro methods as a surface methodology for bacterial strain. It is also used to determine the fatty acid binding capacity of human serum. Polysorbate 80 has been shown to be an effective ingredient in toll-like receptor assays, which are used to study the immune system of humans and animals. In vitro studies have shown that polysorbate 80 can inhibit the growth of malignant brain cells, which may be due to its ability to bind histidine. Polysorbate 80 has also been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties due to its ability to inhibit benzalkonium chloride and monoclonal antibody-induced histamine release. It is biocompatible and non-toxic, with an LD50 value of >5g/kg in rats and rabbits.
