2-Pentylfuran is a chemical that is found in food. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of Aspergillus fumigatus and other fungi, which may be due to its ability to block the synthesis of ergosterol, an important component of fungal cell membranes. 2-Pentylfuran has been detected in various foods, including wheat flour, sugar beet pulp, and barley malt. Solid phase microextraction (SPME) with hydrochloric acid and carbon disulphide was used for the extraction of 2-pentylfuran from these samples. The optimum concentration for detection was found to be 0.2 μL/mL. 2-Pentylfuran has also been shown to have diagnostic properties as it can be used in immunoassays for autoimmune diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). This compound is metabolized by human enzymes into fatty acids and can cause light exposure ery
