2-Propylfuran is a derivative of furan. It has been observed using a spectrometer that the compound reacts with alginic acid and β-unsaturated aldehydes to form disaccharides. 2-Propylfuran undergoes thermolysis to produce furfural, which is used in the production of certain foods. Furfural also has various health effects, including acting as an antioxidant, mutagen, and carcinogen. 2-Propylfuran may react with water molecules to produce hydrogen peroxide and hydroxyl radicals. It also reacts with aliphatic hydrocarbons to produce β-unsaturated ketones. 2-Propylfuran can react with halogens or other compounds to form a variety of products including alkyl halides, alcohols, amines, haloalkenes, amides, esters, nitriles, nitrosamines, and carboxylic acids.
