1-Pentanethiol is a reactive molecule with a chlorine atom and an activated nitrogen atom. It is used as an intermediate in the synthesis of organosulfur compounds. 1-Pentanethiol has been shown to have antiviral effects against influenza virus and HIV, as well as antimicrobial properties against bacteria, fungi, and parasites. 1-Pentanethiol also has transport properties that are similar to those of carbon disulphide. The hydroxyl group on the molecule can be used for chemical reactions that require hydrogen bonding interactions with other molecules. It has been found to be useful in hematopoietic cells because it can activate transcription factors that regulate cell growth. 1-Pentanethiol is also capable of binding to receptor molecules through its chlorinated sulfur atom, which allows it to be involved in various cellular processes such as signal transduction and protein phosphorylation.
