The enantiomer of this compound has been analysed and shown to have an almost identical reaction rate, but the two products differ in their stereochemistry. The (S) form of 2-phenylpropionic acid can be synthesized from butyric acid by asymmetric synthesis using chiral amines. This product could be used for preparative high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).
