It has been shown to have potent antibacterial activity against methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Clostridium perfringens. The molecule can be synthesized in two steps from 4-methoxybenzaldehyde and thiosemicarbazide. 5-Phenyl-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-amine has been shown to react with chloride ions to form a cationic chloride compound. This reaction is reversible and the product can be regenerated by adding ammonia or sodium hydroxide solution.
