5-(Pyridin-4-yl)-1H-1,2,4-triazole-3-thiol is a triazole ligand that can bind to protonated surfaces. The electronic and vibrational properties of this molecule are dependent on the number of electrons and protonated surface. It has been shown that 5-(Pyridin-4-yl)-1H-1,2,4-triazole-3-thiol emits light when it interacts with an electron beam or laser irradiation. This emission is called surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). The functional theory for SERS is based on the idea that an electron in the conduction band of a metal interacts with a molecule at its surface by transferring energy to the molecule's vibrations. This energy transfer causes the molecule to emit light at energies different from those in its natural state.
