2-Picoline N-oxide is a cationic monomer that polymerizes in the presence of deuterium isotopes and n-dimethyl formamide. The copper complex catalyzes the polymerization reaction. This compound is not commercially available, but its chloride yields can be used to synthesize it. 2-Picoline N-oxide can be prepared by reacting picolines with hydrogen peroxide and then hydrolyzing the resulting n-oxide with sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide. The x-ray crystal structure analysis of this compound reveals that it has a high value for intermolecular hydrogen bonding as well as a low value for intramolecular hydrogen bonding. 2-Picoline N-oxide also has structural similarities to phosphotungstic acid and halides, making it an ideal candidate for use in high pH environments.
2-Picoline N-oxide belongs to Group P2 in the periodic table of elements, which includes nitrogen, oxygen,
