Protosappanin A is a sesquiterpene lactone that is found in the Chinese herb Oroxylum indicum. Protosappanin A has been shown to be effective against prostate cancer cells and microglia, which are cells of the central nervous system. It induces apoptosis by activating pro-apoptotic proteins such as caspase-3 and caspase-6. Protosappanin A also has an effect on cardiac muscle cells, which may be due to its ability to activate TLR4 receptors. This effect is thought to result from its ability to inhibit polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and transcription-polymerase chain reaction (TPCR). The inhibition of PCR and TPCR prevents the synthesis of RNA and DNA, respectively, leading to cell death.
