Pentafluoronitrobenzene is a compound of the benzimidazole family that reacts with activated amines in a nucleophilic substitution reaction. The mechanism of this reaction involves formation of an intermediate carbocation, which can be stabilized by electron-withdrawing groups such as nitro or chloro substituents. Pentafluoronitrobenzene has been shown to react with primary amines to form copolymers with high molecular weights. This compound also has a reactive functional group that allows it to be used in flow systems and as a chlorine atom scavenger for industrial processes.
