Perfluoroallene is a molecule that has a phase transition temperature of -55°C and is soluble in hydroxide solution. It can be used as a diagnostic agent, which is activated by hydrogen fluoride and emits light. The fluorescence of the compound changes with pH, making it useful for identifying target tissues. Perfluoroallene has been shown to react with amines to form organometallic compounds. This reaction also occurs with sodium hydroxide solution, which releases hydrogen fluoride and produces heat. This reaction can be used for low-energy diagnostics, such as photoelectron spectroscopy or microsphere imaging.
