Pentafluoroethyl ethyl ketone is a solvent that can be used in coatings to provide a protective barrier. It is also known as pentafluoroethylethane, pentafluoropropane, and PFEEK. The chemical has been shown to have some effect on the fertility of women. A study published in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives found that PFEEK had an adverse effect on human sperm motility and morphology. Pentafluoroethyl ethyl ketone may react with pesticides and other organometallic compounds to produce chloral, which is an organic compound that can cause headaches and dizziness when inhaled or ingested. Pentafluoroethyl ethyl ketone is also used as a precursor for the synthesis of quinolines, which are often used as pesticides.
