• Descrição: Menthol is a natural compound that is structurally similar to the naturally occurring compound menthone. It is found in peppermint and other plants, where it acts as a natural defense against herbivores. Menthol has been shown to bind to the receptor activity site of the sodium channel, thereby inhibiting the flow of sodium ions into nerve cells. This leads to membrane depolarization and an influx of calcium ions, which causes cell death by apoptosis. Menthol has also been shown to inhibit papillary muscle contractions and increase heart rate in rats. The physiological effects of menthol are believed to be due to its ability to enhance the permeability of the blood-brain barrier and block voltage-gated ion channels in sensory neurons. Menthol has also been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties, which may be due to its ability to inhibit prostaglandin synthesis.
