Rac-3-hydroxy-3-mercaptomethylquinuclidine is a carbonyl compound that can be obtained from the reaction of cyclopentyl chloroformate and hydrochloric acid. Rac-3-hydroxy-3-mercaptomethylquinuclidine has been shown to form isomers with the acetaldehyde dehydrating agent and trifluoride reagent, which can be separated by chromatography. Rac-3-hydroxy-3-mercaptomethylquinuclidine also has a number of medical uses, including xerophthalmia, an eye disease caused by deficiency of vitamin A or carotene. This drug may be used in the treatment of this condition as it isomerizes to retinol in vivo. Rac 3HMMQ also possesses halides that are used for the treatment of various conditions such as hypercalcemia, hypokalemia, and hypomagnesemia.
