Rhenium(V) chloride is a compound of rhenium and chlorine. It can be prepared by the ammonolysis of rhenium tetrachloride in nonpolar solvents, such as carbon tetrachloride or acetonitrile. The molecule has five valence electrons and is classified as a transition metal halide. Rhenium(V) chloride has been shown to have anions that are Lewis acids. These reactions involve the transfer of electrons from Lewis acid to the Lewis base, creating a new bond between the two molecules.
Rhenium(V) chloride has been investigated for use as a catalyst in organic synthesis, but was found to be too expensive for commercial use.
