Sinomenine is a nicotinic acetylcholine receptor agonist. It has been shown to inhibit the oxidation of proteins and rate constant, and to have an anti-inflammatory effect. Sinomenine also has an apoptosis pathway that leads to cell death by inhibiting the Bcl-2 protein. Sinomenine is active against injured cells, with an optimum concentration of 2-3 μM. This drug inhibits the nf-κb binding activity in a dose-dependent manner. In water vapor, sinomenine shows inhibitory properties against nitric oxide production and erythrocyte membrane damage.
