L-Serine methyl ester is a model system that has been used to study the reaction mechanism of the enzyme acetylcholinesterase. It is an amide that can be hydrolyzed by enzymes such as carboxylesterases and esterases. It also has biological properties, including anti-inflammatory activity, and has been shown to inhibit hyperproliferative diseases such as amyloid protein deposition in Alzheimer's disease. L-Serine methyl ester is soluble in methanol and reacts with pyrazole ring to form a bicyclic heterocycle aziridinium. The reaction mechanism for this compound is similar to other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents.
