Sevelamer carbonate is a drug that belongs to the class of non-absorbable phosphate binders. It is used in the treatment of chronic hyperphosphatemia, which is a condition marked by abnormally high levels of phosphates in the blood. Sevelamer carbonate works by binding to dietary phosphate and other phosphates in the body, preventing them from being absorbed into the bloodstream. This prevents an increase in serum phosphate levels. Sevelamer carbonate has been shown to be effective against bowel disease and experimental models for heart disease. It also has been shown to have an effect on infections caused by infectious diseases such as HIV infection, hepatitis C virus infection, or bacterial infection, as well as autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis or systemic lupus erythematosus.
