- [4-(2-Phenylethenyl)Phenyl]Methanol
Trans-4-stilbenemethanol is a natural product that has been shown to have antineoplastic properties. It is an azobenzene that absorbs ultraviolet radiation and forms trans-stilbene, which can act as a potent estrogenic compound. Trans-4-stilbenemethanol has been shown to induce the growth of cancer cells in cell culture. The antiestrogenic effects of trans-4-stilbenemethanol have been studied using the MCF7 breast cancer cell line and the MDA-MB231 breast cancer cell line. In both cases, trans-4-stilbenemethanol inhibited the proliferation of these cells by inhibiting DNA synthesis. Trans-4-Stilbenemethanol has also been shown to interfere with fiber formation in bacteria and yeast through UV irradiation.
