The unlabelled form of the molecule was used for chromatographic techniques to detect its presence in plants. The high values obtained from these methods were quantified and compared with known concentrations of phytuberin, a phytoalexin found in tobacco plants. The results suggest that this metabolite may play a role in plant pathogen resistance.
