Lithium Sulfoisophthalate is a lithium salt of sulfoisophthalic acid. It is a white, crystalline solid that is soluble in water. This compound has been shown to have oxidant properties and can be used as a co-catalyst to produce polymers with high thermal stability. Lithium Sulfoisophthalate also has the ability to absorb chloride ions and release them at higher temperatures. The coordination of the lithium cation with sulfite anions results in three different polymorphs: monolithium, dihydrate, and hexahydrate. The monolithium form crystallizes from solutions containing less than 2% sulfur dioxide, while the dihydrate form crystallizes from solutions containing 2-4% sulfur dioxide. The hexahydrate form crystallizes from solutions containing more than 4% sulfur dioxide.
