Sildenafil is a drug that is used to treat pulmonary hypertension. It is a phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor, which blocks the breakdown of cyclic nucleotides. Sildenafil has been shown to increase the mitochondrial membrane potential and energy metabolism in mitochondria, suggesting that it may be beneficial for wastewater treatment. Sildenafil can cause serious side effects such as myocardial infarction, stroke, and death. The most common side effects are headache, flushing, and upset stomach. Sildenafil should not be taken with nitrates or alpha-blockers since this can cause a severe drop in blood pressure. The optimum concentration of sildenafil is 20 μM.
