N-Succinimidyl 4-azidosalicylate is a cross-linking agent that is used in the production of biomaterials. It reacts with proteins and other molecules, such as DNA, to form covalent bonds. The resulting cross-linked material has increased strength, which can be beneficial for use in tissue engineering. The reaction between N-succinimidyl 4-azidosalicylate and amino groups on proteins produces amide bonds. It is believed that this reaction is responsible for its ability to bind to basic proteins. In addition to being used as a cross-linking agent, N-succinimidyl 4-azidosalicylate is also involved in the biosynthesis of fatty acids and peptides.
