It is a white solid with low solubility in water and low reactivity. 5-Sulphosalicylic acid has been shown to be an effective inhibitor of methyl ethyl, p-hydroxybenzoic acid and other organic compounds in wastewater treatment. It also has a role in synchronous fluorescence and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy studies of chemical reactions, as well as being used for structural analysis of phenols.
