Selenious acid is a white, odorless crystalline solid that is soluble in water. It has been used as a fixative agent in biological and biochemical studies. Selenium inhibits the activity of cyclin D2, nitrate reductase, and methyltransferases. Selenious acid also has inhibitory properties against human lung cells (HL-60). The rate constant for the reaction with selenite was determined to be 1.8 x 10^(-4) M-1 s-1 at 25 degrees Celsius, which is much higher than that of other metal ions tested. Selenious acid can be detected by chromatographic analysis and can be quantified by measuring the hydrogen selenide released during the reaction between it and water vapor.
