Salinosporamide A is a novel anti-cancer compound that belongs to the class of aldol cyclization reaction. It is an irreversible inhibitor of protein kinase C and has been shown to inhibit growth factor-induced cell proliferation in vitro. Salinosporamide A also inhibits the production of nitric oxide, which may be involved in the inhibition of growth factor-induced cell proliferation in vitro. Salinosporamide A is selective for cAMP-dependent protein kinase, but not for other protein kinases such as Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II and Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase IV. Salinosporamide A has also shown effectiveness against infectious diseases caused by bacteria and fungi. It acts by inhibiting the synthesis of DNA, RNA, and proteins.
