Sodium bis(trimethylsilyl)amide is a chemical reagent that is used in the synthesis of organic compounds. It is also used as a catalyst in hydrogenation reactions and as a reducing agent in organic syntheses. The compound is characterized by having a solid particle size and an average particle diameter of less than 10 micrometres, which have been shown to be effective catalysts for the reduction of alcohols under mild conditions. Sodium bis(trimethylsilyl)amide has been shown to be useful in the analysis of nucleic acids, proteins, and other macromolecules. It is also used to prepare samples for analysis using gas chromatography or liquid chromatography with mass spectrometry.
Sodium bis(trimethylsilyl)amide can be prepared by reacting hydrochloric acid with magnesium salt and hexamethyldisilazane at room temperature.
