Descrição:Strychnine nitrate is a white powder that has the appearance of a crystalline solid and is soluble in water. It is used as an insecticide, an acaricidal agent, and as a nematicide. Strychnine nitrate acts by interfering with neurotransmitter release at the synapse. This agent binds to receptors for monoamine neurotransmitters such as dopamine and serotonin, preventing their normal function. The consequences of this interference are convulsions, muscle spasms, respiratory failure, and death. Strychnine nitrate is also used in pharmaceutical preparations such as tablets and syrups to treat insomnia and gastrointestinal disorders.
