Strychnine is a poisonous alkaloid that is used in some countries as an insecticide and chemical weapon. It is also used in the pharmaceutical industry to produce certain pharmaceutical preparations, such as analgesics, stimulants, and convulsants. Strychnine has been shown to inhibit the binding of acetylcholine to receptor cells, leading to the activation of the serotonergic system. This drug causes muscle spasms by blocking nerve impulses that are transmitted through the spinal cord and brain stem. The primary target for strychnine poisoning is the hippocampus, which controls memory and learning. Strychnine HCl hydrate (STRY-H) is a salt form of strychnine that can be administered intravenously or orally for pharmacological treatment of diabetic neuropathy. STRY-H blocks nerve impulses by inhibiting acetylcholine release at synapses in diabetic patients with neuropathy.
