Senkyunolide I is a natural product that has been identified as the major active constituent of Rhizoma Gastrodiae. It exhibits potent anti-inflammatory and anti-tumor activities. Senkyunolide I inhibits the activity of the enzyme glutathione reductase (GSH-px) and prevents mitochondrial membrane potential collapse by inhibiting ATPase activity and increasing intracellular calcium concentration. This compound also inhibits P-glycoprotein (Pgp) and exerts an antioxidant effect on neuronal cells, leading to apoptosis in vitro. Senkyunolide I has shown to be a potent inhibitor of tumor cell growth in vivo, with no toxicity effects observed in mice or rats.
