o-Tolunitrile is a colorless liquid which has a strong aromatic odor. It is used as an intermediate in the production of other chemicals, such as phenylacetic acid and toluene diisocyanate. o-Tolunitrile is not hazardous to humans because it does not accumulate in the body. This chemical can be made by reacting methyl ketones with nitrogen gas in the presence of hexane and an oxidant, such as nitric acid or hydrogen peroxide. The reaction mechanism for this process involves the addition of one molecule of nitric acid to two molecules of methyl ketones, forming three molecules of methyl ethyl ketone peroxide. This product then reacts with nitrogen gas to produce o-tolunitrile and water.
o-Tolunitrile has been shown to react with benzene and xylene at high temperatures, forming polymers that are stable complexes. These polymers have been shown using FTIR
