Trityl tetrakis(pentafluorophenyl)borate is a reactive metal-organic compound that is used as an efficient and stereoselective method for the synthesis of trifluoromethanesulfonic acid. The Friedel-Crafts reaction involves the reaction of a halogenated aromatic compound with an alkyl or aryl group, which can be activated by a cocatalyst such as zinc chloride. Trityl tetrakis(pentafluorophenyl)borate has been shown to produce trifluoromethanesulfonic acid in high yields when reacted with zirconium dichloride and a cocatalyst of triethylsilane. This method can be used to synthesize various disaccharides, including maltose, cellobiose, and sucrose.
