5-(Trifluoromethyl)-1-imidazole (5-TFI) is a coumarin derivative that has been shown to have cardiac and leukemia inhibitory effects. It acts as a substrate for cholesterol acyltransferase and inhibits the production of fatty acids. 5-TFI also has an anti-cancer effect on carcinoma cell lines, which may be due to its ability to inhibit the activity of protein kinase C. 5-TFI is able to produce death in Hl-60 cells with anesthetics, but not in healthy cells in a dose-dependent manner. The compound has a dipole moment, which provides it with ionization potentials for reaction monitoring by mass spectrometry or nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy.
