3-(Trifluoromethyl)phenylmethanol is an inhibitor of fungal biosynthesis. It binds to the active site of a fungal enzyme called phenol oxidase. This binding prevents the formation of a covalent bond between two molecules, which is necessary for the production of melanin, and thus inhibits the growth of fungi. 3-(Trifluoromethyl)phenylmethanol has been shown to inhibit pyricularia in cell culture at concentrations that are less than 1 nanomolar. A x-ray structure has been determined for this inhibitor bound to its target enzyme. This structural information can be used to design new inhibitors with improved potency and selectivity.
