1,3,5-tris(trifluoromethyl)benzene is a reactive and ancillary reagent that has been used in a variety of organometallic reactions. In these reactions, 1,3,5-tris(trifluoromethyl)benzene reacts with metal compounds to form organolithium compounds. These organolithium compounds are useful for the preparation of cycloalkanes. The reaction mechanism for the formation of cycloalkanes involves the nucleophilic attack by 1,3,5-tris(trifluoromethyl)benzene on the metal compound followed by reductive elimination. The product of this reaction is an arene. Structural analysis has revealed that 1,3,5-tris(trifluoromethyl)benzene is a molecule with three carbons and three fluorine atoms.
