3-Aminotetrahydrofuran is an organic compound that has inhibitory activity against a wide range of microorganisms. 3-Aminotetrahydrofuran is synthesised by reacting ethyl ester with nitrochloride in the presence of magnesium and hydrochloric acid. The chloride ion is also added to this reaction, which allows for the synthesis of quaternary ammonium salts.
3-Aminotetrahydrofuran inhibits protein synthesis by inhibiting c1-4 alkyl transfer reactions, which are required for the synthesis of proteins. It also inhibits hydroxyl group transfer reactions, which are needed for the production of ribosomes and many other cellular components.
