Tetrahydro-2H-thiopyran-4-ol is a compound that belongs to the class of diphenyl sulfoxides. It can be synthesized by reacting hydrogen sulfate and diphenyl sulfoxide in the presence of phosphorus pentoxide and grignard reagent. The crystal x-ray diffraction patterns of this compound show a strong interaction with anions, such as sulfur dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, and carbonate ions. Tetrahydro-2H-thiopyran-4-ol reacts with naphthalene to form a heterocyclic ring system called thioxanthone. This reaction is catalyzed by silicon.
