1,4-Thiazepan-5-one is a novel biomolecule that is spontaneously generated in the presence of oxazepines and can also be synthesized by nonribosomal peptide synthesis. 1,4-Thiazepan-5-one has been shown to inhibit the growth of Streptococcus pyogenes. This molecule has also been shown to act as an alkylating agent in Streptococcus mutans and soil bacteria. 1,4-Thiazepan-5-one inhibits bacterial growth by binding to fatty acids on the surface of bacteria. It can also form conjugates with various human cells such as erythrocytes and neutrophils.
