1,3-Thiazole-5-carbonitrile is a drug candidate for the treatment of cancer. It has been shown to be active against tumor cells in vitro and in vivo. 1,3-Thiazole-5-carbonitrile has also been shown to have a pharmacokinetic profile that is similar to that of 5-fluorouracil (5FU), which is currently used in the treatment of colorectal cancer. The drug candidate has been modified with substitutions at the 2-, 3-, and 4 positions to improve oral bioavailability and reduce toxicity to healthy cells. These modifications were validated using bioanalytical methods such as quantifying the amount of 1,3-thiazole-5-carbonitrile in plasma after administration.
